Years of Faith, history and legacy
Founded in 1934 during the Great Depression, Victory Tabernacle Seventh-Day Christian Church was born out of a community seeking hope, faith, and guidance during challenging times. The church was established by believers dedicated to observing the seventh-day Sabbath, keeping the Ten Commandments, and living by the principles of the Bible.
In the early years, the congregation worshiped in different locations until, on January 1, 1942, they joyfully dedicated their permanent home at 252 West 138th Street in New York City, where the church continues to serve today.
Pastoral Leadership
Over the decades, Victory Tabernacle has been guided by faithful pastors whose leadership shaped the church’s spiritual growth and mission:

- Elder Philip J. Bailey (1937–1964
- Elder Henry Grant (1964–1972)
- Elder Dingwall C. Fleary (1972–1978)
- Pastor Garfield Hawthorne (1978–1982)
- Pastor DeForest (Buster) Soaries (1982–1985)
- Pastor Charles French (1991–2006)
- Pastor Desmond Johnson (2007–Present)
Even during seasons without a resident pastor, the congregation showed remarkable resilience—remaining steadfast in faith and serving the community through dedicated lay leadership.
Community Outreach
Victory Tabernacle has always been more than a place of worship. Over the years, the church has become a center for learning, support, and wellness in the community:
Education – Vacation Bible School, youth retreats, and tutorial programs have inspired and equipped generations.
Social Support – Project SHARE provided food assistance in exchange for community service, helping families in need.
Health & Wellness – The church has hosted programs on AIDS education, domestic violence prevention, and asthma awareness.
Looking Ahead
For over 90 years, Victory Tabernacle has stood as a beacon of faith, service, and hope in New York City. Today, the church continues to build on its legacy by revitalizing its tutorial program, developing new initiatives for senior citizens, and strengthening its outreach to meet the needs of the community.
